Catching up

Sayings that I've posted on Facebook but nowhere else:

Mom: "Taylor, how old are you?"
Taylor: Smiles up at mom.
Mom: "Are you going to show me with your fingers how old you are?"
Taylor: Still smiling.  "They're hiding."  He was showing three fingers while his hands were still in his pockets.

I was giving [Trevor] a pep talk about choosing the right while he is at 5th grade camp. I reminded him of our family motto: "Light is might, so choose the right." [Tyson] decided to play with some of the well-known slogans and this is what he said:
Stop freakin', start readin' (the scriptures) (Stop freakin', call Beakin'),
Jesus Christ is on your side ("Nationwide is on your side").
I'll say he is pretty clever.

Conversation with my sweet 6-yr-old (BriAnn) at 3 am this morning:
Her: "Mom, why are you closing one eye?"
Me: "It's glued shut."
Her: "Why did they glue it shut?"
Me: "'They' didn't glue it shut. The cold in my eye did."
Her: "oh"
All this after she had just been sick. How sweet of her to think of her mom when she was feeling lousy!

I was doing my homework, hoping a certain little boy would take a nap. After several times of tucking him and telling him to go to sleep, I locked his door. A little while and many happy playing sounds later, he started knocking on the door. He called my name. I didn't respond hoping he would sleep. He got me when he knocked and said, "Trick or Treat! Anyone there?" Had to laugh, open the door and give that boy a hug!

Tyson successfully made it through getting an IV for the first time (unsedated) and through the surgery to remove his tonsils and adenoids. He was a trouper!!!! He did have issues with the meds after he woke up (sick stomach) but is up and feeling better now.
On a sadder note: we lost one of our squirrel friends today. He became a crispy critter after blowing up the transfer box in front our house. Luckily, the power company was out and fixed the problem shortly after it happened!

Walking with 2.5 yr-old the other day I learned a life lesson in child rearing: He wanted to push the taller-than-him stroller and was not able to see past his feet where he was going. I kept trying to course correct him so he wouldn't end up in the trees or the street. Each time I did, he got upset and said, "No mom, I do it!" I told him I could see things up ahead that he couldn't and I was just helping. He still didn't like it. So, I thought to myself, "Just let him be and see what happens." He didn't go in a straight line or progress as quickly as I would have liked, but he did it! He stayed on the sidewalk, making adjustments each time he started off the sidewalk. Once he realized I wasn't helping anymore and that he was staying "on the path", he looked back at me with a huge smile and a look of self-confidence as though he knew he was succeeding.

Even though I may know what is up ahead and want to shelter my children from making any mistakes, I know now that I need to let go, even if it is just a little bit, and let them make those mistakes, learn from them, and gain confidence in their ability to choose the right.

Last night after Gymnastics camp, my oldest was having a rough time wanting to go back because it was too hard and he just couldn't do it. He was mad that I had asked the instructors of the camp if they would be covering the stuff required to earn his Gymnastics Belt Loop and Pin. When they read the requirements, the said they could cover the stuff. It has been hard for my less-than-flexible 10-yr-old to do some of it. So, I wrote a letter to the instructors this morning and had him "proof-read" it to make sure it was ok. He read about how it was optional for them to get the Belt Loop and Pin and that the Cub Scout motto is not to be prefect but to "Do Your Best" and learn new things and if the instructors deemed it too hard, it was ok not to earn them. When he was done, he said "I don't think I need to take this letter mom. After thinking about it, that is what they are doing, helping me to Do My Best." Boy was I glad he didn't want to take the letter! Way to go, Trevor!

1 boot + 1 eye = 7 stitches = Glad it was at the end of the weekend and not the beginning! He was such a trooper! He had the ER Dr and nurses chuckling with his stories about the cabin. — at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Center

2014 - Where does time go?

I realized that I have not been writing in my journal very much and that I am not blogging.  So, how am I keeping track of my life?  And that of my kids?  I'm not doing such a great job.  In my English 333 class that I'm taking from BYU-I as part of the Pathway program, I've been reminded of the importance of journaling.

Here is me committing (hopefully better than the last time) to posting to my blog again.

As a family, we have been enjoying hiking together.  We are working towards 10 miles to help Trevor earn a merit badge.  He is now an 11-year-old scout.  Tyson is a Bear (9-years-old).  BriAnn is 6 (turning 7 this month), and Taylor is 3.
